The dense concentration of fashion-related uses gives the neighborhood its name. Since its inception in 1800, the New York City garment- and fashion industry has had nearly two centuries of history. This neighborhood is a living tribute to that history. Although Manhattan‘s main hub for clothing manufacturing moved from the Lower East Side to the blocks between 14th & 23rd streets, over the years, its current location is in Midtown Manhattan. It is as iconic and storied as ever.
If you’re ever in the area and want to explore, here are some fun things to do in the district. First, grab a coffee at Madman Espresso. Warm and cordial baristas? Check! Rich and amazing lattes? Double check! Warm and cozy? Triple check! It’s just a few blocks away from Penn Station. After a relaxing visit to the cafe, stroll the fashion walk of fame. The walk runs from 35th to 41st Streets, along the east side of 7th Avenue. This will allow you to see the designs that made the Garment District the fashion capital in the world. The Walk of Fame features 28 plaques that honor some of the most well-known (and less well-known) designers.
After the sun sets, you can head up to Top of the Strand. Premier Magazine praised the location for its stunning view and tranquility. It’s an urban oasis, with a retractable rooftop that showcases the New York city skyline year-round. Eat dinner, and you can watch the city turn into night. Lastly, be inspired! Garment District Space for Public Art features the best of the neighborhood’s artistic and design talent. For the most recent Public Art installation, visit the plazas located between 36th Streets and 41 street. They change displays every four to six weeks.
